It's a bit embarassing to explain how much Clara means to me and the effect she had (and still has!) in my life... She's very interesting & complex, as almost every historical woman at the time... She makes me sad as much as she makes me feel inspired!

So... How I feel in love with Clara Wieck-Schumann?
Funny you guys asked... because I was just about to rant about that! My little fangirling started in early 2026... I got enrolled into psychology school... The months before, however, I started digging through my old interests, which led me to re-discover my passion for music! It started with consuming media with musicians on it, but soon I got the worst FOMO ever seen and picked up piano seriously. Along with that, I also picked musicology once again, this time with a big focus on german romanticism rather than french one. So, that's how I, once again, got obsessed with Robert Schumann...
After long weeks of reading, I finally got onto a more Clara-based analysis of Schumann which made me get more interested in her! I spent that day binging articles exclusively of Clara... That's how I got deeply into her, her life, and her art!
This kind of coincided with me dropping psychology to pursue music... She (and Robert) may or not have been a big inspiration for me to realize that and make that decision, but even if she wasn't, she is a big inspiration for me when I feel unmotivated! Her point of view as a woman also shaped my experience in music spaces and criticism of it... Overall, she's absolutely fun to learn about!

Clara performed approximately 61 years! With her first public appearance being in 1828 at nine years old and her last one being in 1891 at seventy-one (if maths doesn't fail me...) Despite men, including her husband, in her life telling her to give up on performing, she kept going! Though it is true that when she got married these performances decreased significantly, she never dropped them altogether

Despite being very influencial in the 19th century & somewhat talk about in music spaces, I don't think she's recognized properly— both in music spaces and general historical knowledge (← Girl who is very passionate about her)... Thought I guess It's normal to not when you aren't in the music space... or maybe it's just more common to not be into music at all in where I live. Women have always been overshadowed by men, so, to be honest I don't expect people to bring up historial women... like...... everrr.... As you can see, I truuuuuly truly love her a lot... And I want people (outside music spaces) to know her... Let's All Cherish

Early Life & Music Education
Clara was born close to music, with her mother, Mariane, being both a pianist and a soprano, and her father, Friedrich, was known for being a music educator. After her parents divorced in 1825, she stayed with her father in Leipzig, while her mother moved to Berlin with Adolph Bargiel. Since then (and perhaps a bit before) Clara’s father planned her music career and overall life.

Once she left for Berlin, Clara started having systematical lessons from her father, including piano, music theory, harmony, counterpoint, and (probably) more. Despite her musical education, her general education was kind of neglected, although she still had lessons in French & English with a tutor. Later in life, Clara mentions that despite his unyielding nature, she appreciated (and thanked him for) the education he gave her.
Her teens and transition to adulthood In 1828, Robert met Clara around late March. This was also the year where Clara had her first public appearance & debut at age nine at the Leipziger Gewandhaus! At this point, her father changes roles, from a mentor to a manager of sorts. From then, Clara toured European cities accompanied by her father. During this tour, she got to meet a lot of other artists, like Goethe, Chopin, Paganini, and many others that I’m probably forgetting! During the 1830s a heeeell tons of things happened, so I’ll probably skip many things! However, the things I can recall are the publication of her first opus, Quatre Polonaises, in 1831, her second opus in 1832, and her third opus, dedicated to Robert Schumann in 1833.
Continuing in the music line, in 1835, Felix Mendelssohn directed Clara’s piano concerto in A minor, Op.7 (Later published in 1836-7) … however, they did meet before (in 1832), and later on became acquaintances! In that same year, and now more relationship wise, her relationship with Robert got more intense after his breakup with Ernestine von Fricken. In the Robert matter… In 1837, Clara being 18, he proposed to her. Despite her acceptance of the proposal, Wieck STRONGLY refused the marriage… However, Robert and Clara sued him. In 1838, Clara was nominated imperial chamber virtuosa by the emperor Ferdinand I! Last year of that decade, Clara, who was already 19 turning 20, went on her first concert tour without her father, however, she had to return earlier than planned due the juridical disputes.
